Library News!
The library is slowly blooming into a fantastic resource for those interested in spiritual growth, increased Biblical knowledge, children and youth books and wholesome entertainment. We have it all! If you haven’t stopped in at the library for a while you might be pleasantly surprised. It has grown considerably.
Since the library annex opened we have seen an increase in the number of books being checked out – especially children’s early reader books. We will continue to add these and other books to the library as we can, so check the annex for new books around the first Sunday of each month and also check the main library for books you might not know we have.
Our library uses the Library of Congress Classification system (LCC) to organize books instead of the Dewey Decimal System. LCC is very easy to learn. Just as Christian books were mostly in the 200’s section in the Dewey Decimal System, they are now in the “B” section in LCC. There are quite a few shelf labels in the main library to guide you to your area of interest. The annex clipboard has a more detailed list of the system and the main library has a notebook on the library desk with a more detailed list as well. In addition, there is a subject list on the bookshelf behind the library desk to help guide you.
Below is a sample spine label along with an explanation of the label:
BT751.2BT is the Doctrinal Theology section – numbers 750-811 cover the subject of salvation (soteriology)
.A37A is usually the first letter of the author’s last name – the other numbers represent the second and third letters of the author’s last name. There is a chart that is used to determine what the numbers will be.
Some spine labels are a little more complicated than this one, but most of our spine labels are in this format. Books are shelved alphabetically by the first two letters, then by the number following the letters, then by the first letter of the author’s last name, then by the number following that.
If you are looking for a specific book or author, it is best to look that up on the computer. The librarian is usually in the library before and after the first service. She will be glad to look it up for you or show you how to use the software.
Did you know the library has more than just books? We have videos, audio CDs and DVDs as well. If you want something short to read, we also have pamphlets and small books in a case by the children’s section. There are many interesting subjects covered in these alone, so be sure and browse the collection. They are in no particular order.
When you find the book you want to check out, use the scanner in the main library or sign your name beside the barcode of your book in the annex. Both require the last 4 digits of your main telephone number.
Happy reading!
